This is a list for aspiring geeks who consider themselves above newbie level and below guru, whether you run Windows3.x/9x/NT, OS/2, Linux, or a Mac OS. Or rather, you have 75% of a clue and 25% is still missing! If you have been bitten by the computer bug, and would like to learn more in a friendly and helpful environment, this list is for you!

Hello - I would like to respond to the Andover.net review of my list. I'd like to add that while it's gratifying that my list was reviewed, the reviewer should have taken a little more time before writing his/her review - I'm not exactly pleased with it, as it's kind of a backhanded compliment.
Point #1:
"It's chatty and conversational, this discussion list that was created by a tech support guy with a loving heart."
Heh - nice compliment but the last time I checked, I'm still female.
Good grief, Andover, it's the new millenium, get with the times! You don't need a dick to be a geek anymore.
Point #2:
The example of a "recent post" that was used was something *I myself* posted.
The review comments:
"At other places, she'd be flamed to a crisp for even mentioning Windows or admitting she doesn't know Java yet. Just goes to show you, there are still a few evolved humanoids in the world of tech. "
Now I know that's supposed to be a good thing, but oh, for cripes sake... What is that, a nice way of saying that my list is the only only place I wouldn't be told to go home and bake cookies?? Grr!
Number one, I mentioned Windows Media, not Windows itself. I am the assistant admin for my company's sports broadcast network. We stream live and archived games, and we used the *free* Windows Media Codecs. If I remember correctly, Real Audio incurs a fee for using theur codecs. At the time of that post, I'd only recently begun my assistant duties, and I needed to become familiar with Windows Media. It's not that I'm overly crazy about anything made my Micro$oft (eh, who is?!), but when that's what 80% of your customer base uses, and it's free...
As for 'not knowing Java yet', I'd like to make the point that not everyone in the world has/had the time or the luxury to devote their lives to every aspect of geeking - I started out in the World O' Geek late and have come a long way since then. There are other people on the list who don't know any languages yet either, and some are just beginning to learn Linux. This list wasn't created for "gurus", which I state explicitly in the list description.
I was one of the first female
techs at my ISP, and the pissing contests and "net.dick" contests that went on appalled me. Part of why I started this list was to move away from some of the
egotistical/macho aspects of the geek community and focus more on education & plain old "cool shit" without listers feeling like they had to prove anything.
Back in the day, geeking was a way for me to stretch my mental muscles and challenge myself, it was a vast field of untapped knowledge and constant learning. It was not a way to prove how cool I am and how well I fit into a
just another scene. I hope that my little list encouragings learning and experimentation more than ridiculous pontificating and ego-stroking! And I certainly hope that women feel comfortable posting on a list where they don't have to be admins to be acknowledged.
