LIST-MODERATORS seems to go up and down. One week, it's full of posts. The next, nothing happens, and it might stay this way for a month or more. Then it gets busy again, with at least a few posters saying, "Gee, I thought this list died. I forgot that I was subscribed."
This is a much-needed list, and we heartily recommend subscribing to it before you consider starting your own e-mail discussion list and lurking to see what sort of challenges you'll face. And challenges there are.
Some of the discussions in List-Moderators center on technical details; what kind of list software to use and how to use it; whether to have your list hosted by a commercial, ad-supported service -- and which one. That sort of thing.
Promotion advice is also requested and given. After all, what use is an e-mail group if no one knows about it?
But the longest-running, perennial topic here is people. It is a fine line between letting a discussion group develop a personality and letting it get out of hand and drifting totally away from its original intention and subject matter.
Again, anyone thinking about starting an e-mail discussion list should joinh List-Moderators. And so should anyone who is already running one, who wants to discuss its management with fellow moderators.
