WIN98-L's official full name is the "Windows 98 Give-And-Take List," which is a far better, if cumbersome, description of its nature. It is a fine, furry, full open unmoderated discussion of Windows 98 features, bugs, bugfixes, and workaraounds.
A typical WIN98-L "Please help me" post:
Today I tried to change the default icon for folders. I opened RegEdit, browsed to the key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\DefaultIcon and changed its Default value to " C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\cool.dll,6 ". But still my folders are showing up with the old icons, even after a reboot? Is there a way to enforce them using the icon I prefer?
A number of ansers appeared within hours. The original poster, his problem solved, thanked everyone and went on about his/her business. This is a common example of the "Give-And-Take" on this list. <
Despite being unmoderated, each message posted to WIN98-L automatically carries this message across its bottom when you read it:
ALL messages to the list MUST include 1 or more valid Topic(s). Do NOT respond to invalid messages. The only Valid Topics are APPs: INTernet: DESKtop: BETA: COMM: NETWork: INSTall: HARDWare: BACKup: WISH: BUGS: GENeral: (commas between multiple topics) "Other" is NOT a valid topic. Topics help: GET WIN98-L.WELCOME
Members apparently respect this rule. We scanned over three months of posts and saw none that were at all off-topic. If you subscribe to WIN98-L, we hope you will stay on topic as well as current subscribers do.
The only problem we had with WIN98-L was its extremely high volume. You could easily end up with a dozen+ messages a day from it in your e-mailbox. One could argue that the reason for this is the high number of bugs in Windows 98. Or one could argue that, since this list is intended for "power" users, and since its content is so tightly focused, the volume is worthwhile for anyone who uses Windows PCs all day, either for business or pleasure.
