iMac Linux Project
Well, OK! Here we go with a fairly populous new mailing list that's all about Linux on the iMac. It's another eGroups mailing list, with a very useful companion site. If you don't find what you're looking for here, you don't need it.

If you're new to Mac and Linux, you can feel free to ask away on the mailing list. Everyone seems helpful and there are no flames.

David,
check out Diald at http://www.loonie.net/~eschenk/diald.html (You can find prebuilt rpm's at your favorite linux/PPC ftp site). That program may take some configuration, but seems to correspond to what you want.
