When I went back to my notes on the MORE TRAFFIC NEWSLETTER I found the word, "Cheesy" written there. This was a reminder to myself that I found their Web site one of the cheesiest I had seen in a long time. That's saying a lot, Gentle Reader, because your Tech Mailings guy (TMG) looks at scores of newsletters and e-zines every single week. I don't personally think I would depend on someone who couldn't produce an attractive Web presence for themselves to advise me on how to get more traffic for my site.
That said, I poked around the place for a while in the hope that maybe you can't judge a book by its cover. I was also hoping that the tips and tricks More Traffic had to offer would be like thunderbolts from Olympus, thus adding justification to their existence.
Well, I didn't get fried by any thunderbolts. I did see tons of come-ons from the Usual Suspects list of "miracle" promotion outfits. I saw all those Link Exchange and Banner Swap programs, too. Again, TMG was made to wonder: if these things work, how come none of the Web sites that use them are groaning under the load of all their visitors?
Anyway, here's a sample of one of the tips from More Traffic's newsletter for your consideration:
"Today's Traffic Tip
"Click-thru Network
"This is a guaranteed traffic generator for your website.
"All you have to do is open an account at Click-thru and begin surfing for credits. You are taken to a web page that has the click-thru logo on it. When you click on the logo a pop-up box will appear. Then you select another web page to visit, click on the icon and repeat the procedure. It is fairly easy to rack up 100 credits per hour if you don't get side tracked by following links. When a web site catches your eye, bookmark it and revisit at a later time.
"When you are surfing for credits, keep focused on just clicking the logo. If you wander off easily, you can become discouraged and might think it is not worth the effort to work on your credits. For every credit you earn, your site will appear in the pop-up box to be clicked on by another surfer.
"Your website won't survive on click-thru credits alone, but it is a guaranteed way to get visitors to your site that otherwise might have never found your web page. Hopefully, once there, your site will catch the surfer's eye long enough to look around or bookmark you for a return visit. Remember that most surfers are on your page just to get credits for their site, so put your click-thru logo next to your most important selling point.
"For $15/month, you can double your click thrus - for each credit you earn, you are given a free credit. You can also purchase credits outright if you don't want to spend the time surfing..."
