If you ever want to create an interesting situation, create a mailing list on e-groups on which people who post do not have to be members of the group. It turns the whole thing into an unmoderated newsgroup. Nothing more, nothing less. Actually, it's an even nicer situation for spammers, because they don't even have to expose their e-mail address in order to blast their get-rich-quick messages.
Unfortunately, that's exactly what has happened at the Merkin Lounge mailing list. It's been taken over by spammers. I wonder how they find it so consistently.
Of course, I also have to wonder who, if anyone, reads the spam. Now that I've informed you, perhaps you'll travel over to the archives and take a peek at the junk mail and advertisements. Maybe you'll buy something.
But probably not. I'm just warning you in advance, in case you saw this list in our database and thought it might be a good list on which to sign up. You've been put on notice.
