FOURTHDEV probably stands for fourth-level Web development. I'm not sure. What I am sure of is that this is a great resource for new and experienced Web designers who want to get it right. Whether you're putting together your first Web site or have been around and need tips, this newsletter and Web site are worth a look. Quinn Slack, the man behind the curtain here, gives good design, graphics and promo recommendations.
Quinn is the mastermind behind Web Design Times, a newsletter that will help you make the most of being a part of this new frontier. He works tirelessly to help you not work too hard at getting it right.
When I went to look at the kind of advice and articles he presents, I found this:
"How to get Word of Mouth Out About Your Site
"Word of mouth is probably one of the most important things that a Webmaster can get. Basically, it means that someone liked your site enough to tell his or her friends. To get some good word of mouth you will need to do a few things.
"The first thing that you'll need to do is to have real content. Content isn't links or pictures of yourself. When I say content, I mean content that other people could use, and come back for. When I see pages without content, I leave immediately.
"The second most important thing to do to get good word of mouth going is to update frequently. If you never update your site, then visitors will never come back! It's simple. A site that never updated is like watching one TV show for all of your life.
"The last, but certainly not least important way to get word of mouth going is to build a community around your site. You may think this is hard, and it is. But, it pays off tenfold. A community is something that allows your visitors to interact with each other. A good example is a forum or a chat room.
"I guarantee that if you execute these instructions you will have much more web site traffic than before. Although some chat rooms and forums cost money, you will most likely gain it back may times by the advertising or other revenue created by the number of return visitors..."
Common sense? Yes. But Tech Mailings Guy continues to believe that common sense is what most Webmasters need to be reminded of. Check it out.
