CRYPTO-GRAM's catchy name is no misnomer. It's an authoritative monthly e-mail newsletter about computer crytography and security issues written by Bruce Schneier, president of Counterpane Systems, a Minneapolis-based consulting firm specializing in cryptography and computer security.
Minneapolis-based Counterpane is the originator of the Blowfish and Twofish encryption algorithms, the Yarrow secure pseudorandom number generator, and is a highly-respected consulting firm in the computer security field.
Crypto-Gram, as Counterpane's "house organ," contains a certain amount of self-promotion, but is not overly laden with attempts to push Counterpane's products or services. At least 90 percent of the content is general discussion of security issues that are useful for persons interested in any facet of computer and computer-based communications security.
The writing quality here is high, and the target audience is sophisticated enterprise computer users and managers, not home PC users or hobbyists.
Regular readers of Crypto-Gram who also turn regularly to Counterpane's informative Website may not become instant experts in computer security, but will, at least, keep up-to-date on new developments in the field, as seen through Mr. Schneier's eyes.
