DIGITAL DIGEST is the free bi-monthly e-mail newsletter published by Jupiter Communications, the respected market-research firm based in New York, N.Y. The newsletter serves two purposes: to update its subscribers on Jupiter Research's latest market analysis and two provide a means of informing you of the many events and forums the organization provides.
You have the option of receiving this information on the Web, where a regularly updated archive exists, or subscribing to the e-mail newsletter. Tech Mailings would recommend visiting the Web site first and determining if this is the kind of information you want via e-mail. Our feeling was that, while much of the information is valuable and of interest, it was slanted toward promoting Jupiter Communications events. I'd probably do the same if it were my newsletter, but as I said yesterday....
That latter statement is not meant in any way to downgrade the value of the information presented around the "advertising hole." Here's a partial look at information from a recent newsletter:
"Internet Appliances in Europe
European Internet Strategies
"Among the vast array of non-PC Internet appliances emerging in Europe, Jupiter projects that smart phones will be the market leader, with over 12.9 million users accessing Internet content in 2002. To compete in this market, content providers must filter and aggregate today's raw Web content for the small size and limited functionality of Internet appliances.
"Although most new mobile phones will be Internet-enabled (with a microbrowser by 2002), only a small percentage of these phones will be actively used for Internet data services. While Internet appliances will not display Web sites, they will access specially filtered content from existing Web servers...."
This is clearly important information for the Webmaster of an international corporate intranet. Such an individual probably would not find the conference and forum information as intrusive as the casual reader of this newsletter.
