CABLE MODEM AUSTIN is a discussion list on the e-Groups server for people in and around Austin, Texas, USA, who are either on one of the cable Internet access systems, or interested in discussing the quality of the service and other options like ADSL. At first blush, you might not think this would be a list that would interest people outside of Austin, Texas, but I think you might be wrong.
Okay, I'll admit that I looked at this list because I used to live in Austin, Texas; but that's not the only reason. If your area is like mine, you are only recently getting cable modem or DSL access. That means you might be curious about how other people have experienced the switch-over from the analog phone lines and the 56K-tops connections. It could be called Consumer Market Research, if we wanted to give it a fancy name.
I know that in my area, we still don't have cable modem access, and are just getting DSL. So I was interested to look into a list where people had both, compared them, and maybe could provide insight into:
- Which is better.
- Which is more cost effective.
- The customer service attitudes of the vendors and ISPs.
That's exactly what I found in this discussion group. People weighed the merits of services like Road Runner, and . They talked about factors you might not consider during the purchase decision, like the "flat time" of loading a Web page. (One cable modem service user said he'd get nothing when first hitting a page for five or ten seconds, then the whole page would load lightning quick. But he felt the flat-time of five or ten seconds represented the type of service degradation that you might not get on DSL. Food for thought.)
So give this list a look-see, if you're the curious type like me, and maybe even join in. These folks seem welcoming enough.
