MARKETING TIP OF THE DAY (MTOTD) is the newsletter of the Clearly Internet Web site and is produced by Ira Pasternak. This is another of those lists focused on suggesting promotional ideas for on-line businesses.
Mr. Pasternak makes it very clear that he drives the agenda of this newsletter. This is what you'll find on its introductory Web page:
"Each day, MTOTD subscribers receive a tip that helps them take one specific action to market their business on the Internet. Each tip includes specific instructions for carrying out the action. In general, Tips are organized into a series of several tips that fit together to help achieve a larger goal.
"MTOTD is a closed list. Only Ira Pasternack, the List Editor, can post messages to subscribers.
"Contributions: If you are interested in contributing a Tip to MTOTD, contact Ira Pasternack at to discuss the idea(s) you have (any questions about MTOTD should be sent to the same address). In general, contributions that fit in with an upcoming series of tips will be accepted. In addition, we will consider collaborating with subscribers on an entire series of tips. Contributions from individuals who do not first personally contact Ira Pasternack will be read as our schedule allows, but will receive the lowest priority..."
I felt this was a slightly chilly way of welcoming someone to a mailing list, but continued to delve further.
In the archives I found tips which were straightforward and step-by-step, as promised. Here's a sample:
"Today's Tip: Fresh Content for Your Internet Presence - Delivery
"By Ira M. Pasternack
"One of the most important things you can do to get people to return to your site again and again is to keep your content fresh. Today, we continue our series about issues related to keeping your content fresh with a tip to help you determine the best way for you to deliver your content.
"Steps to Carry Out the Tip:
1. One way to deliver your content is to use an email mailing list, that visitors to your site can sign up for. MTOTD is an example of an email list used to deliver content. If you are delivering plain text, email may be the way to go. If you do deliver your content via email, remember to point people to your Web site in your email messages.
2. Some content is better delivered via the Web. If your content includes graphics in addition to text, you can use the Web to present it. You can also incorporate more cutting edge content into a Web site, such as streaming audio or video (or, you can point to the url for streaming content via an email message).
3. If you deliver your content via the Web, you should provide a way for your visitors to be reminded when fresh content is added. You can allow them to sign up for an email announcement list, and send out a message when you add new content. One service you can use to create such a list is Netmind, you can learn more about this at http://www.netmind.com/html/webmasters.html (I'm tentatively planning a series of tips about using Netmind, but that won't be for at least a few weeks)...."
