I'm not sure why TechMailings has not gotten around to the ONE STEP AHEAD newsletter before now. TMG gives his sincere apologies. This is a broad-focused Internet information newsletter out of Australia. One Step Ahead, produced by the First Step Communications Web site, makes it a point to cater to its Australian audience, but has great trend-reporting for people from around the globe.
The Web site, produced from Leederville, Western Australia, has a very user-friendly interface. You can access the on-line archives of the newsletter easily and very obviously this site was built for speed and ease-of-use; all things that Tech Mailings Guy loves, as regular readers of this column have come to learn.
This site is all about producing a global index of trends in digest form. Here's a snip from the archives:
" Society
"Internet use among farmers doubles
"The United States Agriculture Department reported a doubling in the numbers of farmers using the Internet from the same time in 1997. Farmers are increasingly finding the Internet to be a valuable tool for sharing information, exchanging ideas and even purchasing tools and machinery.
"Electronic books still don't make the grade
"Traditional publishers need not be worried - yet - by the threat of "electronic books", which are portable computers that can hold the content of up to ten books at a time. Sales are slow, with consumers still preferring the paper versions.
"Education
"UK government targets Net paedophiles
"The British government is launching a new initiative to stop child pornography and paedophilia, with a special emphasis on protecting young Internet users from abuse.
"On-line marketers take aim at the young generation
"Marketers are turning to the Internet to target children. One report found that more than half the children surveyed have asked their parents to purchase an item for them on the Internet, and one in six children is actually given permission to make Internet purchases themselves..."
If tracking global trends, quickly and concisely, is part of your bag, this a newsletter you'll find interesting and informative. Check it out.
