CHIPDIR-L is a question/answer list about integrated circuits used in computers and other electronic devices, and it is apparently populated entirely by technicians and engineers. There are no manufacturers' biases or sponsorships here. This is pure technical help at its finest.
Since virtually all questions are unique (and generally relate to obscure parts or applications) there is no FAQ list. The associated website is at http://www.xs4all.nl/~ganswijk/chipdir/.
Sample posts:
Q: "I need to generate horizontal synchronization and vertical sync., but I don't know how to do it. Is there a very simple chip to do this? I have not video signal, I just need to print character on a TV screen. Can you help me?"
A: "You may try SAA5254 (teletext IC) and MC1377 (RGB encoder, if You need color video). You command by I2C the teletext ic and wire the rgb and sincro output to the encoder. The teletext IC delivers B/W video signal. Datasheets are available on the web. There is available an OSD IC from NEC uPD645x if I remember correctly, but you need H and V sincro. You can obtain them from SAA 1101 universal sincro generator. But in both cases you need a microcontroller to command the teletext or osd ic-s."
Question to answer elapsed time can vary between a half hour and two days. Multiple answers -- which do not always agree with each other -- are common, but most disagreements have to do with differing manufacturers' specs, and are rational discussions, rather than flames.
