Penguin Power Mailing List
The PENGUIN POWER MAILING LIST is the newsletter from the Penquin Power Web site out of Sweden. This site celebrates Red Hat Linux, in its English version, which links to the redhat.com Web site. Then there's also Linux Online for more general information, FAQs, and news stories about Linus Torvalds and Linux. Do I sound confused? Well, that's because I am. More on that below. You see, the entry to this site is just part of a much larger site covering everything from television listings to sports to fashion. The only problem I had is that most of the rest of site is in Swedish, one of many languages I can't read.

If you read Swedish, then there's plenty to see and do once you get to Penguin Power. It's a well-designed, very classy looking site. They must go wild over it in Sweden.

The newsletter, on the other hand, is tied to the more focused content of Linux news. The site also links to other Linux-oriented Web sites like Slashdot, Freshmeat and Linux Week. This is what I thought at first.

Then I said to myself, "Wait a minute. Maybe I'm missing something here."

So I clicked around the page a bit. I tried clicking on the Penguin image that said "Links." Nothing doing there.

Now, at the very top of the page, in a separate frame, was what I mistook for an advertisement. It was one of those animated gifs that I hate so much. It was flashing: "Got Linux?" Then "99,44% pure operating system." Then "Click here!" I figured since it was the only place on the Penguin Power site that wasn't in Swedish and wasn't just a link to redhat.com, I'd give it a shot. It took me to linux.org, the Web site for Linux Online.

Aha!

Here there was a lot more information. There were pages on how to install Linux, etc. All the stuff you'd expect to flow to a Linux newsletter. Now I was getting it. Some of my confusion lifted.

But, I started thinking to myself, why did the guy who designed this site make it so difficult to get to the core information? Was this about Linux Online, RedHat.com, or something totally different that I had yet to discover?

I'm much clearer on the newsletter. The purpose of the newsletter is to update you as to when there is new information published at the Linux Online site. Once you become part of the list, according to the "Services" page, you can opt into specialized discussion groups where people talk about employment opportunities for Linux jocks, or development progress, or any other topic that suits your fancy. I'd say check it out. And if you speak Swedish, all the better, because then you can enjoy the Web site more, too.
